3 KEYS TO CRUSH YOUR 2022 GOALS
We are about two weeks into the new year and I don’t know about you, but I’ve set some exciting goals for this year! Wait... let me guess. You did too, didn’t you!?
Did you set new year’s resolutions last year also or is this a brand new thing for you?
Either way, most people – especially at the beginning of the year – set their sights on big dreams, bucket list items; they tell themselves, “This year is going to be different.” You get the picture.
Sad truth is, by the time 2nd quarter rolls around, many people have either given up or forgotten about these life-enhancing endeavors.
So I put together 3 KEYS to make sure you actually hit your goals this year:
KEY 1: IDENTIFY WHY HITTING YOUR GOALS IS A NON-NEGOTIABLE
Your "why", your emotional purpose, and your conviction have to be greater than all the excuses, the obstacles and bad habits you are going to face.
Humans are emotional creatures with the ability to think logically, not the other way around. If we were in fact “logical creatures” then we would all be hitting our goals. It would just make sense!
So why is it that the majority of the population throw their goals to the wayside before the snow begins to melt?
If you do not get clear on WHY this goal is non-negotiable, you will fall back into the same patterns that got you here in the first place.
So here’s what you’re going to do:
1. Grab a sheet of paper and write down one goal… just one goal crystal clear! (If you happen to be part of the minority who do this, I challenge you to be part of the ULTRA minority and do it for all your other goals!)
2. Answer the question, “Why is _____ so important for me to hit?” then you’re going to take that answer and plug it right back into the same question and answer it yet again. Do this between 5-7x until you hit a heart string.
KEY 2: BREAK YOUR GOAL DOWN INTO BITE SIZE ACTIVITIES
How does a marathoner finish a marathon? One mile at a time.
The concept is so simple but few people actually take the time to identify their “mile.” Most people create lofty goals without creating a daily action-oriented focus… and while those people didn’t plan to fail, they failed to plan!
If you establish consistent and timely milestones, you’ll be able to know when you’re on or off track and need to adjust your activity.
Let’s say you’re trying to earn $10,000 in a month and you earn $500 for every sale you make. In order to help you hit your goals, you’re going to want to take the time to identify:
- Your weekly earning goal
- Your weekly sales goal
- Your weekly pitching goal
Here's an example:
Monthly Earning Goal: $10,000
Now divide your monthly goal by 4 weeks (that’s about average)
Weekly Earning Goal: $2,000
Now divide your weekly goal by the commission you earn ($500)
Weekly Sales Goal: 4 Sales
Now you’ve identified your RESULTS goal, but we haven’t gotten clear on the ACTIVITY piece! THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS!
Let’s say for every 3 sales pitches, you close 1 sale. So now you’re going to multiply how many sales you’d like to achieve by 3.
Weekly Pitch Goal: 12 Pitches
Now to make up for cancellations, reschedules, or sick days, I tell all my clients to set an additional 10-20% just in case, which now means you should shoot for 15 Pitches a week – which is 3 pitches a day!
See how much more dialed in we are!?
Now, if you REALLY want to knock it out of the park, then also take the extra time to:
- identify exactly how many appointments you’ll need to set
- know how many connections you’ll need to make
- commit to an exact number of outreaches you’ll need to execute
- block out the precise amount of time you’ll need in your calendar to make those outbounds
The more granular and precise you can get on what you need to do and when you need to do it, the more likely you’ll stay on track.

KEY 3: PLAN FOR YOUR OFF HABITS NOW - BEFORE THEY HAPPEN!
Notice I said, plan for your OFF HABITS and not your OBSTACLES. You are where you are at now, not because of what you encountered, but because of what you did when you had a challenge.
Every tiny decisions you made – on target or off target – has gotten you here today.
Consistency always wins, and the name of the game is to make as many on target decisions as we can for as long as we can.
Here’s how you’re going to regain your momentum when something happens to derail you:
1. Write down the behaviors, bad habits, or actions that will take you farther from your goal.
This could be smoking, spending over budget, drinking, not prospecting. Whatever your “off target” actions are… write them all down. These are your RED LINES.
Anytime you DO this, you are taking yourself one leap backwards from hitting your goals.
2. Now take a second to identify every situation, person, event, or circumstance that could lead heighten the chance for you to give into temptation or a bad habit. Let’s call these YELLOW LINES.
An example would be if I am hungry, then I am more inclined to eat junk food. In this case, the state of being hungry is a yellow line. When I remember “oh yea, I’m hungry and this is a yellow line,” I am now aware that I am in more likely do make a unaligned decision that can break my momentum. Eating junk food is the RED LINE.
3. Name the actions, activities, and habits that keep you in a state of being or put you in a situation in which you’ll more likely make goal-aligned decisions.
If I go to the office, I’m more likely to prospect.
If I take an hour to exercise in the morning, I’ll be more emotionally steadfast through my day.
If I read before bed, I’ll probably sleep better and in a timely fashion than if I watch TV.
Alright, now it’s time for you to take action! Go out there, construct your plan then follow it! You really can do this!
